Centre for Waste Management & Indian System of Medicine Laboratory jointly organize "An awarness programme on startup Initiation in Kumizhi village" commemorating National Startup Day 2025

An awareness program on startup initiation in Kumizhi Village, commemorating "National Startup Day," was organized by Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology in association with UBA on 26/01/2025. This program introduced women to successful ventures, encouraging them to explore local business opportunities such as soap making, value-added cow dung products, incense sticks, and camphor manufacturing. It featured interactive sessions, group discussions, and individual counselling, addressing business development and financial support needs. Enthusiastic participation led to diverse ideas, including millet-based snack production, highlighting the need for loan assistance. The program emphasized financial guidance and skill development, fostering a strong entrepreneurial spirit.

An Awareness Programme on ">Nutrients in Food" - 16th October, 2023 Brochure
Centre for Waste Management, Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) in association with DST- STI- HUB, organized an awareness programme on "Nutrients in Food" commemorating World Food Day on October 16, 2023 at Panchayat Union Middle school, Aadhanur, Kattumannar Kovil taluk, Cuddalore district. Around 110 students participated in the event from the class LKG to VIII standard. The Assistant Headmaster, Mr. Murugan delivered the welcome address. Adhanur village president Mr. Nagarajan Maheshwari, delivered the keynote address. Following which the Centre for Waste Management team members delivered the talk highlighting the benefits of cereals, grains, and pulses, easily available nutrients from rural areas, required nutrient percentage of daily life foods, importance of fruit/vegetable derived liquid diets and importance of palm jaggery, honey instead of white sugars. Ms. Kalaivani (Headmistress, Panchayat Union Middle school, Aadhanur), Mr. Murugan (Assistant Headmaster, Panchayat Union Middle school, Aadhanur) and Mr. Nagarajan (President, Adhanur village) distributed the certificates and gifts to all the school children's. The healthy porridge distributed to all staff members and students towards the end of the program. Ms. Vidhya, BT Assistant delivered vote of thanks.

An Awareness Programme on "Women and Health Care" - 11th April, 2023 Brochure
Centre for Waste Management, Centre of Excellence for Energy Research, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology organized An Awareness Programme on "Women and Health Care" on 11th April 2023 commemorating "World Health Day". Centre for Waste Management team shared their own health, fitness and nutrition related experiences for the benefit of the women auto drivers. Ms. Meenakshi, representative of the women auto drivers enthusiastically involved herself narrating the reason of driving auto to be the choice of livelihood of many women gathered for the programme. Around fifty women including auto drivers, tempo traveller driver, ambulance driver, beauticians, social activists and home makers participated in the program to derive the importance of being healthy. The participants were encouraged with a memento and a certificate recognising their service to the public in the transportation sector.
Cancer Awareness Programme for Women Commemorating National Cancer Awareness Day - 2022 [16th November, 2022]. Brochure
Centre for Waste Management jointly with Centre for NanoScience and Nanotechnology and Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering conducted a Cancer Awareness Programme for women auto drivers on 16th November 2022 at Government Anganwadi School ground, Vadapalani. About 40 women auto drivers from different auto stands in Chennai including Nanganallur, Pallikaranai Jayachandran, Sozhinganallur, Thalamai Seyalagam, Thiruvanmiyur, ECR, Pallavaram and Kovilambakkam participated in the programme. The women auto drivers shared their experience and interest during the programme. The organizing team illustrated the benefits of some commonly available vegetables and fruits that can be taken to prevent cancer. The participants were also thrown light on the importance of periodic cancer screening and the vaccinations that can be taken to prevent cancer. The conveners also explained about the menstrual hygiene and its role in cancer prevention.

Centre for Waste Management, Centre of Excellence for Energy Research jointly with Centre for Aquaculture Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology organized "An Awareness Programme on "Popularization of Biodiesel for Fueling Fishing Boats" commemorating World Biofuel Day on 10th August 2022 at Tsunami Quarters Karikkattukuppam Muttukadu. Dr. M.V. Rajeswari, Assistant Professor (Research), Centre for Aquaculture co-ordinated the program. 25 fishermen returning after fishing enthusiastically participated the programme. Dr. Dawn S.S ,Professor (Research) Centre for Waste Management, explained about the various initiatives of the centre. The importance of biofuel and its role in Climate resilience was explained. Fishing boat fuel (Diesel) requirements per boat, frequency of fishing in a year and related information were gathered by the research team for further studies. The scheme of producing biodiesel from waste cooking oil and its benefits from environment, economy and efficiency points of view were explained. The participants were encouraged to fuel the boats with biodiesel in blends with diesel gradually from 1% - 10%. They showed keen interest and involvement in blending biodiesel with diesel and using the blends in their boats. The program ended with handing over of biodiesel to the fishermen as an encouragement to fuel their boats. The fuelling of the boats with biodiesel blends was announced and the participants eagerly welcomed the event planned to be convened on 17th August 2022.

Centre for Waste Management, Department of Electronics and Communication, Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology organized An Awareness Programme on Hydroponics: An Alternate Farming Technique for Soil Conservation" on 22nd April 2022 for the farmers of Thirukazhukundram block at Gokul Krishna Farm, Neikkupi, Kalpakkam. Agri Dr. Shanthi Sivakumar, CEO, SS FARM TECH, Chennai introduced to the participants the concept of Hydroponics and the different farming techniques involved in it for soil conservation. The Scientific team also visited the Gokul Krishna Farm at Neikkupi, Kalpakkam and witnessed the Hydroponics farming practised in at Gokul Krishna Farm. Agri Dr. Shanthi Sivakumar explained how hydroponics farming is favorable for the cultivation of cucumber, micronutrients, tomatoes etc. The team is also executing a Science Technology Innovation Hub at Kattumannarkoil, C,D Block, Cuddalore District supported by Department of Science and Technology, Government of India,in which Automated Hydroponics Framework will be implemented shortly for promoting the cultivation of agricultural produces for the livelihood promotion of the identified beneficiaries in the Aadhanur, Eachampoondi and Periakottagam villages. About 50 marginal workers will be benefited through this intervention.
Centre for Waste Management, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology organized a "Waste Cooking Oil Collection Drive " commemorate National Safety Day on 4th March 2022 , elucidating Food Safety. The Scientific team started the drive from the institution campus and covered the Sozhinganallur and Medavakkam stretch covering about 5 kms. The team approached Ponnusamy Hotel, Salem R R Briyani, Hotel Ramanaa's and Sundari Restaurant. The team highlighted their focus on collecting the waste cooking oil that is generated during the frying operations in their restaurant. The health impacts posed by the Waste Cooking Oil reuse for frying and cooking were explained and how they will be playing a major role in prevention of health hazards by giving the used cooking oil to the centre for waste management who are in turn using it to produce biodiesel. The environmental hazards of throwing away the waste cooking oil into sewer lines and on landfills were also explained creating an awareness on both food and environmental safety by diverting the much-generated waste cooking oil for biodiesel production. The drive was completed with an agreement from the hotels and restaurants a major portion of their waste cooking oil to Centre for Waste Management, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology. As a consequence of the drive, the centre will be getting waste cooking oil from the restaurants apart from the volume of waste cooking oil it has been receiving from the institution's mess that caters to the food needs of about ten thousand inmates on an average daily.

Centre for Waste Management, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) for commemorating Zero Discrimination Day organized an Outreach Programme "Educate and Empower Women" on 1st March, 2022 at Kumizhi Village, Chengalpet for the Self Help Group Women. Importance of Domestic Waste Recycling and usage of Waste Cooking Oil were highlighted by Dr.Dawn S S, Professor ( Research). The adverse impacts of used cooking oil on the Environment and Health were also illustrated to the participants elaborately. Ms.P.Priyadharsini, Scientific Assistant from Centre for Waste Management demonstrated the procedure of soap making from waste cooking oil. The participants were also actively involved and got the hands-on training for making soap from used cooking oil.There were around 15 participants who benefited from the programme. The CWM team also introduced the POOMANAM brand to the Self Help Group which contained four members who were already associated in incense stick making for Ritual Waste. Dr.Dawn encouraged the team to get empowered with the livelihood earning skills of soap and incense stick making and make themselves equipped to fight discrimination in terms of gender. This way the participants were encouraged to become earning members , supporting the men of their family, henceforth be not a victim to discrimination.
Centre for Waste Management, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) in association with Mirai Research Solutions, for commemorating National Science Day organized "SCIENCE FEST 2022" on February 28, 2022 at Government High School, Kumizhi, Chengalpet. Around 100 students participated in the event and nearly 75 working models, specimens and experiments were displayed . The Headmaster, Thiru E. Jayakumar (Government High school, Kumizhi, Chengalpet), delivered the welcome address. Dr. Dawn S.S., Professor (Research) and Head at the Centre for Waste Management, highlighted the "Importance of Waste Management" and elaborated on the several waste to value-added product outcomes of the Centre for Waste Management, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology. Invited guest Mr.M.Arun Govind ,Chairman of Mirai Research Solutions delivered the Inaugural address and motivated the students by indicating how Science can help them become Entrepreneurs. The school students honoured the guests, with their own handmade flower vase and greeting cards. Some of the exhibit models included Needle JCB, electric bike, vacuum cleaner, water dispenser, electric air cooler, sanitizer dispenser, ATM machine, water overflow alarm, hydraulic lift, 3D alarms , Grass cutter etc. The invited guest, Mr. Arun Govind and the Scientific team of the Centre for Waste Management, inspected all the displays. Prizes were distributed class wise. Master K.Dilip (Std.IX), Miss.Sandhiya (Std X), Master Harish (Std.VIII), Miss. Hari Sudha (Std.X) , Miss Dharshini (Std.VI), Miss.Shalini (Std.VII) , Uma Maheswari (Std.VI),E. Nisha (Std.VII), S.Shalini (Std.VII) and A. Abinesh (Std.VII) backed the prizes for their displays. Adhina, Shanthini, Tameen Basha and Deepa received special prizes from invited guest Mr.Arun Govind. All the participants received participation certificates. Centre for Waste Management (CWM) E-Waste Management Wing, comprising of Dr.Dawn S S, Dr.Arun J, Ms. Nirmala and Mr.Santosh A from CWM, Dr.Vinita Vishwakarma from Centre for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology; Dr.S.Barani and Dr.S.Poornapushpakala from Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering created Awareness on "E-Waste Collection and Management "at Jain Spring Meadows, Navalur on 6th March 2021.Residents with their children participated in the event.The participants were given an overview of the sources, harms and impacts of Waste Electrical Electronic Equipments.Questionnaires were distributed and instructions were given to them to enable them collect and giveaway the household generated E-Waste during the Collection drive planned shortly. Kids participated enthusiastically in the games organized. Aloe Vera, Basil and Coleus ( Karpooravalli) saplings were given to emphasize the medicinal effects they have in treating the health hazards associated with the exposure of E-Waste.Students from the Department of Chemical Engineering volunteered in convening the Programme.Vice Chancellor Dr.T.Sasipraba delivered the Presidential Address and Shri Venkatesha Murthy ( Founder and CEO) Vans Chemistry, Bangalore inaugurated the Programme through Zoom.

Centre for Waste Management, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) organized an Awareness Workshop on Waste- A Resourceful Neglect (WARN-15) on 5th August 2015 at the International Research Centre, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University). Undergraduates and Research fellows of different disciplines of Engineering from Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University), Rajalakshmi Engineering College, St.Joseph's College of Engineering, Mamallan Institute of Technology and Central Leather Research Institute participated in the Workshop. Dr.N.Vedaraman, Senior Technical Officer, Department of Chemical Engineering, Central Leather Research Institute delivered and invited talk on "Leather Wastes- Opportunities and Challenges". The session was followed by the "Invisible Recyclers" Campaign of the Kabadiwalla Connect, A World Economy Forum support organization. Centre for Waste Management Scientific team highlighted on the Interdisciplinary Research Prospects on Waste. Essay Writing, Collage Making, Prototype and Photography Display competitions on "Don't Waste the Waste" theme were organized in the afternoon session. First prize in essay writing was backed by Ms.Savithri, of Rajalakshmi Engineering College and the second prize was given to Ms.Priyanka of Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) of Ecoclub. Mr.Praveen Kumar of Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) got the first place in Prototype and Photography Display competition. The Collage Making Competition had ten participating teams and all the three prizes were won by Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) ecoclub students.














Centre for Waste Management, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) organized a One Day Awareness Programme to highlight the importance of Domestic Waste Recycling "Marusuzharchiye Marumalarchi" for the Women Self Help Group at Sankarapuram, Chithalapakkam on 21st July, 2015. There were around thirty participants who benefited from the Awareness Programme. The adverse impacts that household waste can bring on the Environment and Health were illustrated to the participants elaborately. Conversion of Waste Cooking Oil to soap was also demonstrated by the research fellows of the Centre for Waste Management. Student members of the Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) Eco Club and the Community Development Club were actively involved in the Programme to demonstrate the Products they made from the Waste materials. A prize winning activity also featured the programme. The participants showed keen interest and enthusiastically participated in the One Day Awareness Programme "மறà¯à®šà¯à®´à®±à¯à®šà®¿à®¯à¯‡ மறà¯à®®à®²à®°à¯à®šà¯à®šà®¿"








Energy revolution is the need of the hour and Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) has sensed that spreading awareness would be a key tool in achieving it. As a pioneer in engineering education, Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) proudly convened SEEK 2013 which was indeed an initiative to spread the necessity of adapting an emission free technology to meet the rising energy demand.
SEEK 2013, an exceptional event was organized by Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) in association with Solar Energy Society of India and Solar Energy Corporation of India for students with engineering and science background to signify the National Science Day celebrated on the 28th of February every year. This national convention provided a platform for exhibit of ideas in the form of models or posters for the student community. Students from around 40 Colleges/Universities and various disciplines competed in the poster and model display competitions. Students from Anna University Chennai, Easwari Engineering College Chennai and Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) Chennai backed the first, second and third prize of Rs.10,000/ , Rs.5000/- and Rs.3000/- by cash respectively for the Model Display Competition. First prize of Rs.5000/- was given to the students of Bannari Amman Institute of Technolgy, Coimbatore for their poster presentation. The second prize of Rs.2000/- each was shared by the participating teams of Sathyabama Institute of Science and Technology (Deemed to be University) and SRR College .Students from Vignan University, Guntoor, backed the third prize for their poster display.
Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi , Director, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai inaugurated the convention and delivered the Inaugural Address and Dr. S. Iniyan, Director, Institute for Energy Studies, Anna University Chennai, delivered the Keynote address. Dr K S Dhathathreyan, Associate Director and Head, Centre for Fuel Cell technology, ARCI, IIT-M research Park Chennai delivered the Special Address. Dr.K.Srinivas Reddy, Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras, Chennai; Mr.Iyyappan, Senior Technical Officer, Department of Chemical Engineering, Central Leather Research Institute (CLRI); Dr.G.Giridhar, Scientist and Unit Chief , Solar Radiation Resource Assessment, Centre for Wind Energy Technology (C-WET),;Mr.Bhoovarahan Tirumalai, CEO, Aspiration Energy; Dr.M.Srinivasan, Managing Director, AR Solar Energy (P) Ltd and Mr.Vineeth Vijayaraghavan, Founder & Editor, Panchabuta were the other eminent persons who delivered inspirational and awareness creating addresses during SEEK-2013.
